Distance Arc
Quilted Newsprint, Silkscreen, Rust, Inflation System, Timing Electronics

Distance Arc exists in two forms. First being the mechanical design plans used to create the physical form of Distance Arc; a 2:1 re-creation of a hot air balloon crafted from the hand quilting of silkscreen printed newsprint.

The sculptural installation lies dormant in space until an audience enters the room where it then "senses" the viewer thus coming alive. Heaving slowly upward filling with air the body of Distance Arc slowly comes alive with sound and texture from the manipulation and rustling of the quilted newsprint. The body fills and fills until it can take no more collapsing in and onto itself from its own strange weight to an eventual slow and quiet calm.
